Universal’s weather thriller ‘Twisters’ earned an estimated US$80.5 million during its opening weekend. It secured the top spot at the North American Box Office, according to industry monitor Exhibitor Relations on Sunday (July 21).
‘Twisters 2024’ is a standalone follow-up to the 1996 classic ‘Twister.’ Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, known for the Korean-American family drama ‘Minari,’ the film was initially projected to earn around $50 million.
However, strong reviews and a star-studded Twisters 2024 cast led by Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones propelled it to the top of the charts.
If you’re not familiar with the film, the plot of Twisters revolves around Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar Jones), a meteorologist and former storm chaser scarred by a devastating tornado encounter years ago.
Her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) persuades her to return to Oklahoma to test a new tracking system. There, they meet Tyler (Powell), a thrill-seeking social media influencer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Twisters” has achieved the “top domestic opening ever for a natural disaster film,” surpassing ‘The Day After Tomorrow,’ which earned $68.44 million in 2004.
Analyst David A. Gross remarked, “The spectacle, the special effects and the set pieces are bigger and better (than the original film).” He added, “It’s perfect summer entertainment.”
“Twisters” outperformed the previous top earner, another Universal film, ‘Despicable Me 4,’ which came in second with US$23.8 million in ticket sales.
Holding steady in third place at the box office was Disney and Pixar’s coming-of-age animation ‘Inside Out 2,’ with US$12.8 million.

In fourth place was the horror mystery ‘Longlegs’ from indie studio Neon, earning $11.7 million. Nicolas Cage stars as an FBI agent tracking a sinister serial killer.
Rounding out the top five was Paramount’s ‘A Quiet Place: Day One.’ This apocalyptic horror film features Lupita Nyong’o as a seriously ill woman in New York during an extraterrestrial invasion.
