Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has responded strongly to US President Donald Trump’s imposition of a 25% tariff on virtually all Canadian goods, calling it “a very dumb move.”

This move has led to an immediate trade war between the US and Canada, two historically close allies.

Trudeau emphasized Canada’s resolve in the face of these tariffs, stating:

“Canadians are reasonable, and we are polite. But we will not back down from a fight. Not when our country and the well-being of everyone in it is at stake.”

Despite his firm stance, Trudeau also extended an appeal to the American people, emphasizing the negative consequences of the tariffs:

“We want to work with you as a friend and ally, and we don’t want to see you hurt either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. Your government has chosen to put American jobs at risk.”

In response to the US tariffs, Trudeau announced that Canada would impose a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of American goods.

The tariffs will be implemented in two phases: an initial $30 billion worth of goods will face tariffs immediately, with the remaining $125 billion affected within 21 days.

Trudeau emphasized that these measures are designed to protect Canadian businesses and workers and will remain in place until the U.S. tariffs are lifted.

Additionally, Trudeau criticized Trump for his approach in appeasing Russian President Vladimir Putin while launching a trade war against Canada, highlighting the geopolitical tensions involved.

The trade war between the U.S. and Canada has significant economic and political implications.

It threatens the long-standing trade relationship between the two nations and risks higher prices for consumers and potential job losses in both countries.

As tensions escalate, both countries will face economic challenges and political fallout. Trudeau’s stance reflects Canada’s determination to protect its interests while maintaining a call for cooperation and dialogue with the US.
