The New Generation of P Pop Discusses Its Future 3

Members from different Ppop groups sit down with Billboard PH to discuss the genre’s future. This includes ALAMAT Jao, AJAA Alex, G22 AJ, KAIA Angela, VXON Franz, and YGIG Meg. Considered the next Ppop generation, the members talk about their beginnings, achievements, and what they hope to accomplish in the future.

When asked about their start as an idol, AJAA Ppop group member Alex said that he started when he was thirteen. He’s currently fifteen years old and already an idol.

When it came to their biggest achievements with their respective Ppop groups, KAIA’s Angela said that their solo concerts are certainly their notable ones. She said that it was a time to connect with their fans and showcase to them what they can offer as a group.

Bret, the interviewer, also pointed out the ALAMAT Ppop group’s collaboration with Kpop group, NewJeans. “Filipino talent has so much to offer, and nakakaproud na ngayon nakakakita na tayo ng Filipinos on big stages, international stages. Kaya let’s keep going, let’s keep pushing.”

With regards to support, G22’s AJ said, “Filipino fans are the best fans ever. They’re gonna be there simula hanggang dulo. They will never leave, ‘yan ‘yung Filipino fans. That’s why Filipino talent plus Filipino fans, boogsh.”

According to VXON’s Franz, the current state of the genre is “Flourishing, and I’m very thankful and honored to be part of that. And to represent Filipino talent and Filipino music to a wider audience is an honor for us. And I can’t wait, and I’m excited na mas lumaki pa ‘yung Ppop industry.”

Additionally, Angela said, “Nandito kami lahat ng Ppop groups, we’re helping each other. That’s why we keep on releasing songs, we keep on collaborating with each other. Para po mas makilala pa po ‘yung Ppop.” To this, AJ and Angela said in unison, “Ppop is not a competition, it’s a revolution.”

According to AJAA’s Alex, “Ppop is already developing na po, marami na pong nakakakilala.”

“I feel like ‘yung Ppop (music) ngayon nasa onting experimental stages pa. Definitely, since kakastart lang ng din po. It’s starting to boom lang din po, parang andaming genres na pwede itry,” said YGIG Meg.

On the other hand, when discussing challenges, the groups discuss the lack of support for them. During this part of the discussion, ALAMAT was praised for its advocacy of showcasing different Filipino cultures.

“There are issues that we face like colorism, ganon. Tsaka, we are very prone to cultural appropriation kasi we use Filipino textiles and Filipino culture. We implement them on everything that we do. Kaya, we need to be careful as ALAMAT. And when we tackle those issues like colorism parang palaban kami when it comes to that,” said Jao.

“Kasi, it’s just wrong to discriminate or judge a person by their color or however they look. Or wherever they came from. Kasi, we’re all human beings, we are equal, and we love you so much,” Jao continued.

For the future, the groups hope to have more support from the general public, and possibly the government. Moreover, they hope for more collaborative concerts and events.

Further into the interview, Bret mentioned SB19 members and their established solo careers. He asked them if they would also seek out solo careers and collaborate with other artists.

“We’re not just, you know, singers, dancers. We’re all artists, we all write our own songs. We produce our own songs, and I think that’s the beauty of it. If we ever go solo, we can really work together and form beautiful music,” AJ answered.
