The 1985 cult classic movie The Goonies is getting a confirmed sequel, with some of the original cast potentially making a comeback.

The original movie starred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, and Kerry Green. John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Mary Ellen Trainor, Keith Walker, and Lupe Ontiveros were also in the film but have since passed away.

The US Sun reports that the Goonies sequel will begin filming next year, with a potential release in 2026 or 2027.

“A source told The Sun that discussions about a Goonies reboot have been ongoing for a long time, but it has finally received the go-ahead to move forward.”

“The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to a new audience,” they added.

The insider also said that since “the youth adventure market is on fire,” the Goonies sequel producers wanted to create a plot that the fans and new audience would both love.

“The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right,”

“The Goonies is 39 years old now and the idea that they can bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience has the team very excited,” they added.

‘The Goonies’ was based on a story by Steven Spielberg that follows the treasure-hunting adventures of a group of kids from Goon Docks in Astoria, Oregon.

Rumors suggest that Steven Spielberg will direct the sequel, titled ‘Goonies are Good Enough.’ Although unconfirmed, the plot likely takes place 40 years after the first film.
