GMA Public Affairs’ documentary program, “The Atom Araullo Specials,” has earned the Silver Dolphin Trophy at the Cannes Awards. This marks another major win for the program, as it also won a Silver medal at the 2024 New York Festivals TV & Film Awards.

Award-winning journalist and documentary’s namesake, Alfonso “Atom” Araullo, accepted the award on GMA Network’s behalf.

The episode that garnered the documentary’s latest recognition is “Hingang Malalim.” It aired in 2023 and explored the lives of pearl divers in Sulu, risking their lives in search of pearls to support their families.

It is also worth noting that the Atom Araullo news has won several awards since its debut. Back in 2022, the program had its first win at the Cannes Corporate Media and TV Awards. At the time, its episode “Munting Bisig” won a Silver Medal in the Human Concerns and Social Issues category.

Throughout his journey, Araullo has garnered an array of awards, some of them beginning all the way back in 2008. Some of his most accomplished recognitions include 3 PMPC Star Awards, a Platinum Stallion Media Awards, and Gandingan Awards, to name a few.

Adding to Atom Araullo’s awards, he also won Excellence in Feature Writing (Regional). He also received an honorable mention in the Excellence in Photography (Regional) category for his special report “The Hunger Pandemic.”

GMA described Atom Araullo as one of the most well-decorated broadcast journalists to date. He is well known for his extensive coverage of serious topics, such as the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. The many TV programs he has worked on have grown in popularity thanks to his charm and approach.

“It was an amazing experience for me. And more than that, it’s really seeing how things are done behind the scenes, preparing for a shoot, being in the field, and also seeing how the stories are put together. I found that quite magical,” Araullo once shared in an interview.
