On January 28, 2025, a South Korean airplane fire occurred at Gimhae International Airport, leading to a dramatic evacuation of all onboard.
The incident involved an Airbus A321 operated by Air Busan, which was preparing for a flight to Hong Kong when flames erupted around 10:30 PM local time. Fortunately, all 169 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated safely, although seven individuals sustained minor injuries during the chaotic escape.
The South Korean airplane fire reportedly originated in the tail section of the aircraft, with preliminary investigations suggesting that a portable battery stored in an overhead bin may have ignited the blaze.
Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of panic as flames spread rapidly, prompting passengers to scramble for exits. Emergency slides were deployed on both sides of the aircraft, allowing passengers to evacuate quickly.
Local authorities responded promptly to the incident, with firefighters arriving within 8 minutes later to extinguish the flames that sorrounded the rear of the plane. The evacuation process was described as chaotic.
According to the passenger seated near the emergency exit, the door, and the flight attendant opened the opposite one, allowing others to start evacuating as smoke filled the cabin.
As of now, investigations into the cause of the south korean airplane fire are ongoing.
The South Korean transport ministry has stated that they are working closely with Air Busan and other relevant agencies to determine what led to this alarming incident.
The recent fire comes on the heels of another tragic aviation accident in South Korea just a month prior, raising concerns about aviation safety in the region.
