“Shogun” Makes History with Most Emmy Wins

The Japanese historical epic series ‘Shogun’ has made entertainment history by taking the most wins at the 2024 Emmy Awards on September 16. ‘The Bear’ and ‘Hacks’ also took the lead behind the series.

The ‘Shogun’ series took home a total of 18 awards, officially breaking the record of ‘Game of Thrones’ with 12 wins back in 2015. Some of the Shogun’s most iconic recognitions include being the first non-English-language winner for the “Best Drama Series.” 

In similar news, lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada became the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy for his role as Lord Toranaga. Anna Sawai also received a win for her performance as Lady Mariko in Shogun.



“‘Shogun’ taught me when we work together, we can make miracles. We can create a better future together,” Sanada said.

News of ‘Shogun’s Emmy wins has even garnered a joyous ovation from Japan.

“You did it. You did it. Congratulations,” Takashi Yamazaki, director of Godzilla Minus One, wrote on social media.

“What hardships you must have endured, choosing to leave your entire career behind in Japan and going to America alone. But it has borne fruit,” Japanese actress Tomoko Mariya said when reaction to Sanada’s win.



The triumph of ‘Shogun’ in the 2024 Emmy Awards is a monumental milestone for Asian representation within television. Outside of the awards, it was TX’s most-watched series and is described to be a faithful adaptation of Clavell’s written work.
