The hit Japanese-period drama TV series Shogun made a huge impact by earning 25 Emmy nominations in 2024. The series is now officially the second most-recognized non-English-language show under the “Drama” category.
The nominees were announced during a live-streamed ceremony from Los Angeles. While the official winners will not be unveiled until September 15th, the array of recognition alone is already a huge reward for FX and parent company Disney.
“Shogun” has surpassed the comedy-drama series “The Bear,” which has 23 nominations, and “Only Murders in the Building,” which received 21.
The Shogun TV series has also earned the best drama actor nomination for Hiroyku Sanada, who is acclaimed for his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. Additionally, the Best Drama Actress nomination goes to Anna Sawai for her role as Toda Mariko in the series.

Furthermore, Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira, who play Kashigi Yabushige and Ishido Kazunari, respectively, are nominated for the best supporting actor category. Shogun’s Emmy nominations also include the technical categories. The series production design, original dramatic score, sound editing, and stunt performances are also well-received.
Despite the heavy reliance on subtitles, audiences and voters were unbothered. In fact, they were thrilled to hear that two additional seasons are already in the works. Co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo revealed this surprise last May.
