Pioneering Philippine Pop or PPop boy group, SB19 becomes the first Southeast Asian group to perform on The First Take, a Japan-based YouTube channel.
The channel shares artists to record and share their music on their channel. However, the catch is that they have to do it perfectly in one take, hence their name. The channel’s white room hosts performances by musicians like Harry Styles, V, MÅNESKIN, and other world-renowned artists.
SB19 members Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin performed their international hit Gento in a version exclusive to the channel for The First Take’s 449th episode. The group became the first Southeast Asian artist to be nominated in the 2021 U.S. Billboard Music Awards for Top Social Artist, gaining recognition.
The video was originally released on July 1, 10:00 PM Philippine Time. Since the announcement, their fans (A’Tin) have excitedly awaited its release on the platform. In a statement, the boy group shared, “it was a true first take. So we were very nervous and overwhelmed, but it was fun and amazing experience.”
Moreover, Gento by SB19 rose to fame after its release in 2023, garnering millions of views online and millions participating in the dance challenge. Additionally, its music video has 42 million views since it was live over a year ago. The song is part of their “Pagtatag” album, which just concluded its world tour in May 2024.
The group has performed in various locations internationally and other global recognitions as well. Just recently, they were nominated for “Favorite Asian Act” in the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards for 2024.
Undoubtedly, PPop groups have significantly risen in popularity, with many other groups also making names for themselves. Aside from that, notable groups include BINI, who just concluded their three-day first solo concert, Biniverse at the New Frontier Theater, Alamat, KAIA, G22, and more.
