Robin Padilla Apologizes for Marital Rape Remarks

Senator Robin Padilla apologized to those offended by his remarks during a Senate hearing. He stressed that he never said it was “okay” for husbands to force their wives.

Many have criticized and responded negatively to Robin Padilla’s remarks on marital status. One of those who condemned the actor-turned-senator is the Progressive women’s group ‘GABRIELA’.

“The audacity to question a woman’s right to her own body is a glaring example of the deeply rooted machismo that continues to plague our society,” GABRIELA secretary general Clarice Palce said in a statement. “Senator Padilla’s line of questioning not only disrespects women but also trivializes the serious issue of consent.”

Palce also added: “We’d like to remind Senator Padilla that consent is non-negotiable and must be respected at all times. A woman’s right to say ‘no’ is fundamental and absolute, regardless of marital status. We strongly demand accountability and a retraction from Senator Padilla for his macho and dangerous statements!”

The Senate hearing on August 15 aimed to discuss the TV networks’ policies on how they handle sexual abuse cases. During the hearing, all attention turned to Robin Padilla, who questioned the wife’s decision to say no and how their role is to serve their husbands. He also added how the wife is there to serve men, on which he stated, “may iba talagang urge.”

Many have negative responses to Robin Padilla’s statements regarding the matter. However, others share the senator’s views regarding marriage and consent. Roots of Health has cited a 2021 study that over 30% of people aged 15 to 24 (both male and female) believe it is the wife’s duty to have sex with her husband whenever he is in heat.

Due to the rising controversy, Robin Padilla uses social media to apologize for his remarks and confirm his responsibilities.

“Sa mga na-offend po o hindi nagustohan ang aming pagdinig patungkol sa marital rape, mga kababayan paumanhin po,” he said.

“Ang marital rape po ay may mataas na porciento [sa] ibat ibang lugar sa Pilipinas ibig sabihin meron po pagkukulang ang gobyerno sa pagpapalaganap ng batas at ang pagkukulang na yun ay obligasyon ko na punuan.”

Padilla stated the marital affairs by several religious teachings. “Bakit po namin nasabi na sexual rights? Lumaki po ako sa Bibliya… Malinaw po doon na ang babae ang nagpapasakop sa lalaki.”

“Wag po tayo maging sensitive sa pagdinig sapagkat yun po ang ibig sabihin ng hearing,” he added.
