On July 22, 2024, the Philippine National Police (PNP) withdrew 75 members from Sara Duterte’s security team. Col. Raymin Danta Lachica confirmed that they were relieved of duty without prior notice.

The Vice President addressed the unexpected situation. “I confirm that on 22 July 2024, an Order was issued by the Chief of the Philippine National Police that all of the 75 PNP Police and Security Group personnel that were previously assigned for my protection be relieved.”

Despite the significant reduction in Duterte’s security detail, she assured the public that the order would not impede her work.

“Our work is still ongoing to distribute services to our countrymen, especially to remote or underserved communities in our country.”

Duterte expressed hope, stating, “I do hope, however, that with the latest directive of the Chief PNP, we hear fewer cries from the people regarding the proliferation of drugs in the country and that even fewer shall fall victim to various criminal activities.”

Among those removed from Sara Duterte’s security detail are 33 close-in members who have closely served her during her tenure as mayor of Davao. This sudden order has surprised many local police officials, as no justification was provided.

Marbil explained that the move addresses the PNP’s personnel shortage. This is the case for the NCR. He has recently initiated a series of reassignments in the Davao City Police Office,

He also mentioned the aftermath of President Marcos’ State of the Nation Address (SONA). He noted that several officers were unable to report for duty yesterday due to exhaustion. They were part of the security contingent.

Many expressed concern over the sudden removal of Sara Duterte’s security numbers, with Lachica among those worried. Despite this, Lachica remained hopeful that the VPSPG would remain intact and not compromise the Vice President’s overall security.

According to a Commission on Audit Report on the Vice President’s office from last year, Sara Duterte’s security group had 433 members.
