MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has issued Proclamation No. 665, officially moving the observance of Ninoy Aquino Day 2024 from August 21 to August 23, 2024. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed the proclamation on August 15, 2024. Ultimately, it aims to extend the weekend and boost domestic tourism.

“In order to provide for a longer weekend, thereby promoting domestic tourism, the celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day 2024 may be moved from August 21 (Wednesday) to August 23, 2024 (Friday), provided that the historical significance of Ninoy Aquino Day is maintained,” President Marcos stated in Proclamation No. 665.

The President also instructed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to issue a circular to implement Proclamation 665 for the private sector. This ensures that the observance of the August 23, 2024, holiday aligns with the new schedule. Moreover, following the announcement of Proclamation 665, various institutions have declared the suspension of classes and onsite work on August 23, 2024.

With the adjustment of the Ninoy Aquino Day 2024 holiday, and the regular non-working holiday for National Heroes’ Day on August 26 (Monday), Filipinos can now enjoy a four-day weekend. This move, as per Proclamation No. 665, is expected to encourage more Filipinos to engage in local travel and support the country’s tourism industry.
