PAGASA Predicts Longer Nights and Cooler Days Ahead

pagasa predicts longer nights and cooler days ahead

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical and Services Administration (PAGASA) stated that longer nights are expected amid the beginning of the upcoming equinox.

“During equinoxes, the day and night are each approximately 12 hours long,” PAGASA said. “The time discrepancy is caused by atmospheric refraction, enabling us to observe the sun minutes before it actually rises and sets.”

PAGASA weather forecaster Daniel James Villamil shared that the country is moving toward the winter solstice, which starts on the third week of December. The advisory also mentions that the upcoming onset of the “Amihan” season may bring cooler days.

“The northeast monsoon starts in early November and lasts until February. We can experience colder weather as we are already transitioning from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon,” Villamil said.

“The southwest monsoon does not reach Metro Manila. At present, it only affects Northern Luzon like the Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley. It is located offshore, and it does not reach many areas in the country.”

Outside PAGASA’s longer nights announcement, they have also advised that heavy to heavy rains are expected until the end of the year. The southwest monsoon will continue to bring rains to the Ilocos Region, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands, while the rest of the country will also experience rain through local thunderstorms.

The agency also informed that areas with no low pressure are being monitored within the Philippine area of responsibility.
