Netflix’s latest Pinoy thriller “Outside” has achieved what the film’s cast and crew aim for by redefining the zombie genre.
Sid Lucero, a member of the ‘Outside’ cast, mentioned that the movie was able to subvert the zombie genre with its focus on family dynamics and mental health.
“It’s a great caricature of every family in this country. We all have drama within our families, and this film shines a light on that kind of problem, especially here in the Philippines where mental health awareness isn’t widely talked about,” Sid stated.

Director Carlo Ledesma is proud of how the movie is presented. Promoted as a Filipino movie, Ledesma aimed to showcase the local element in every detail, including the film’s conflicts about generational trauma.
“I think that the backstory that Sid Lucero’s character goes through is something that happens to a lot of Filipinos. I think generational trauma is something that doesn’t get talked about often, and I think maybe should be talked about,” Ledesma said.
Director Ledesma also depicted the zombies in the film “Outside” differently from its predecessors. He emphasized that each zombie has a unique backstory and wanted to highlight that even as monsters, they still show a sense of humanity.

“There had been films where we see zombies talk, but I wanted to put a bit more backstory into all the zombies that I had, in the sense that whatever their last memory was before they were bitten is the last words that they say as humans,” Ledesma added.
“Outside” follows a small family hiding in an isolated farm to evade the zombie outbreak. However, they soon realize the zombies are not the only threat to their lives.
The film premiered on Netflix worldwide on October 17. Check out the trailer below:
