Netflix Announced Ghostbusters Animated Series

Netflix has officially greenlit the ‘Ghostbusters’ animated series. The platform announced the plan in 2022, and news confirmed that Elliott Kalan will carry out the project. He is set as the series’ writer, showrunner, and executive producer.

Kalan is known for his work on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” as the show’s head writer. He was also part of the team that received seven consecutive Emmy nominations for the recognition of best writing. He managed to win four. He is also the head writer of Netflix’s “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”

The show is still in development, and the exact plot details have not yet been revealed to the public. However, they have teased that the 3D animated series will have the same feel as the recent Ghostbusters films.

Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. have joined the “Ghostbusters” animated series crew as executive producers. The two have co-wrote the recent live-action films: “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.”

The former film was well-received by critics and grossed nearly $200 million worldwide. The latter film premiered in March 2024 and earned just over $200 million worldwide against a $100 million budget. The production of the Netflix series will also be based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.

The upcoming “Ghostbusters” animated series will make it the franchise’s 3rd animated series. “The Real Ghostbusters” was the first series, aired from 1986-1991 with over 140 episodes. The second was “Extreme Ghostbusters,” which aired only 40 episodes.

There is no further confirmation on the Netflix series’ date release or how many episodes will be featured.
