Filipina actress Nadine Lustre is confirmed to star in director Mikhael Red’s latest film, Nokturno. It’s Evolve Studios’ maiden project and produced by Viva Films.
The new movie centers around folklore horror, a subgenre the Filipino director has yet to explore in his works.
Mikhail Red is famous for directing the movies, ‘Birdshot’ (2016), ‘Rekorder’ (2013), and ‘Deleter’ (2022).
“In every film that I make, I try not to box myself in. I always aim to learn something new, whether in theme, execution, tone, or treatment,” Mikhail Red said.
Red also mentioned that he wanted to create “a film about a curse that gets passed,” which would center around Filipino folklore and notions of grief.

This resulted in the film Nokturno, for which he decided to team up with Nadine Lustre after the success of the techno-horror film Deleter.
“This film is very different from ‘Deleter,’ although both are horror films. With ‘Nokturno’ I wanted to delve into Filipino folklore and reintroduce an ancient monster to a newer generation with a modern lens,” Mikhail Red told Variety in an interview.
In ‘Nokturno,’ Nadine Lustre plays Jamie, a migrant worker returning to her hometown after her sister’s death due to a curse by a supernatural creature called “kumakatok.”
“The curse of the kumakatok, an ancient entity from Filipino folklore that represents death. It starts if you hear three knocks at your door in the middle of the night [and then] three figures of death will come for you and your family,” Red explains.

“I love the idea of a ticking time bomb, of impending doom. It adds constant tension to the narrative [and] a certain momentum to the story as you wait for time to run out and the finale to arrive,” Red added.
With this project, Nadine Lustre is set to become one of the most sought-after actresses of her time. Aside from ‘Nokturno,’ she’s also starring in ‘Uninvited,’ a Metro Manila Film Festival 2024 entry.
‘Nokturno’ also stars Eula Valdez, Ku Aquino, Bea Binene, Wilbert Ross, and J.J Quilantang. It will be released on October 31, in time for Halloween, on Amazon Prime Video. For now, you can watch its official trailer here:
