Netflix’s new series, KAOS, features a transmasculine romance storyline. Misia Butler, the actor behind it, hopes that it will provide important representation for transgender viewers.

Misia Butler, who is a trans man and identifies as queer, plays Caeneus in the series. Netflix’s official logline for KAOS calls it ‘a darkly comedic and contemporary reimagining of Greek mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld.’

In Greek mythology, Caeneus was portrayed to be a woman who was transformed to be a man by their father, the sea god Poseidon.

In an interview with Yahoo UK, Misia Butler shared how he felt about playing Caeneus in the show.

“It’s very special. They’ve done a really good job of having a rich, complicated character who happens to be trans and whose transness is relevant. I think that’s the key there, that’s so satisfying with good representation. It makes you feel that you’re being seen and not being used. I hope that resonates with people,” he said.

In a recent interview with RadioTimes, Butler revealed that he and KAOS creator, Carlie Covell, shared a touching moment on-set.

“It was my first day of filming, we were doing this scene, my audition scene, where me and another character on a bench were just chatting for a really long time, and I was so moved,” he said.

“And then afterward, I saw Charlie was really moved, too. And we both were just crying and hugging. I was like, ‘I just know that if I was watching this scene as the child that I was, I would feel immeasurably seen,’ and just have had a much stronger experience because I would have been represented in such a strong way.” the actor added.

Misia Butler is known for his roles in various movies and TV shows, including ‘The School for Good and Evil,’ and ‘The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself.’

Aside from Butler, KAOS features a star-studded cast, such as Jeff Goldblum, Billie Piper, David Thewlis, and Suzy Izzard. The series was released on Netflix on August 29, 2024.
