Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, best known for her role in the hit TV series Meteor Garden, has died from pneumonia on monday at the age of 48.
Hsu died from pneumonia which was a complication of influenza while on a visit to Japan during the Lunar New Year holiday. Her sister, Dee Hsu, confirmed the news to Taiwan’s News. Barbie Hsu left her husband, a South Korean singer DJ Koo, and two children from her previous marriage.
Hsu, one of the biggest names in the Mandarin-speaking entertainment world, became famous in the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand when Meteor Garden was dubbed in their local dialects.
This became a big hit in the Philippines for her role as Shan Cai, the lead female role in the 2001 Taiwanese series Meteor Garden in which she acted along with Jerry Yan as Daoming Si.
It was the TV adaptation of the 1990s Japanese comic ‘Meteor Garden’ that launched Hsu to stardom, making her fame known not just in Chinese entertainment.
On Monday, F4 member Ken Chu posted a black, empty screen and a group photo with Hsu on Instagram. He also wrote on Weibo, “What a bolt from the blue.”
Other posts trending were about influenza in Japan as fans attempted to work out how she had become ill.
