CEBU CITY, PHILIPPINES – Firefighters are currently battling a fire that broke out in Barangay Poblacion, Talisay City in southern Cebu at around 9am on Wednesday, January 24.

A residential area in Barangay Poblacion, Talisay City, southern Cebu, witnessed the destruction of 80 houses in an early morning fire. The fire, which began at 8:10 a.m., escalated to a third alarm by 8:23 a.m. due to the rapid spread of flames.

Fire Officer 1 Jerome Dolauta from the Talisay City Fire Office noted that the quick progression was facilitated by the predominantly light materials used in constructing most houses in the area.

As of 9:14 a.m. on January 24, the fire persists, and the Talisay Fire Station firefighters have elevated it to a third alarm. However, by just after 9:20 a.m, the firefighters declared the fire to be under control.

Elmer Labrador contradicted the initial reports suggesting that his house was the origin of the fire. Labrador emphasized that he took precautions before leaving, ensuring that all appliances were turned off, and no food was left cooking.

Ang ilang giingon nga niulbo kuno nga wala man koy giluto diha nga koan unya mao pasad ang paglakaw naku, ang akung asawa naa sad gilakaw,” Labrador said.

Property damage amounted to P3 million, and over 100 families were displaced, as reported by Dolauta.

Rosalito Quijano, a victim of the fire, asserted that the incident originated at the residence of his neighbor, Oliver Rodriguez. Quijano mentioned that it was the fifth occurrence of a fire at his neighbor’s house.

The Fire Marshal of the Talisay City Fire Office (TCFO), lawyer Alvin Torsion, clarified that they encountered no problems accessing the road. However, he emphasized that the notable issue was the high wind speed. Torsion stated, “The wind is really strong.”

Families displaced by the incident are currently accommodated at the city gymnasium. The City Social Welfare and Services promptly provided food and other immediate assistance to the victims of the fire.
