A magnitude 7.1 earthquake just hit southwestern Japan on Thursday, August 8, 2024, which triggered tsunami advisories. Fortunately, there were no immediate signs of major damage.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the recent earthquake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and was centered off the east coast of Japan’s Kyushu island at a depth of around 18.6 miles. It was followed by a second quake at a depth of 15 miles.

Authorities issued advisories for a one-meter-high tsunami on the Pacific coast of the western islands of Kyushu and Shikoku in Japan. Waves up to 3.3 feet are predicted to reach both islands. To enhance safety, authorities also extended the warnings to the Kagoshima and Ehime prefectures.
According to a statement, the Japanese government has also established a special task force to respond to the quakes.
In connection with that, reports state that 20-centimeter-high waves were already spotted in Miyazaki prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. With over 400,000 residents, Miyazaki is on high alert for potential tsunamis. The operation of Bullet trains was also immediately stopped after the earthquake.
Japan is considered one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. It is located within the Pacific “ring of fire.”

In March 2011, the country experienced a powerful earthquake magnitude of 9.0. It followed a devastating tsunami that destroyed the northeastern coast of Japan and claimed the lives of 20,000 people. As a result, it sparked the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown.
More recently, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the north-central region of Noto and claimed the lives of 241 residents.
