Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation Larry Gadon on Wednesday, November 27, called on the Supreme Court to initiate motu proprio disbarment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Gadon, a disbarred lawyer himself, accused Duterte of making inflammatory statements against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez, calling them “illegal, immoral, and condemnable.”

With Gadon’s recent complaint, it highlighted Duterte’s controversial past, including an incident as Davao City mayor when she physically assaulted a court sheriff enforcing an order to dismantle informal settlements.

“Is Sara Duterte a lawyer upholding the rule of law, or one acting against it?” Gadon questioned.

He claimed the Vice President’s recent online rant had been seen and heard by millions, making the case a matter of public interest.

The Sara Duterte case has sparked debates in the legal and political communities. Lawmakers, including Speaker Romualdez, labeled her statements a threat to democracy.

Meanwhile, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año assured the public that all threats against President Marcos would be thoroughly investigated.

As the disbarment motion gains traction, the public remains divided. Questions like “How old is Sara Duterte?” and “Is Sara Duterte a lawyer capable of upholding ethical standards?” dominate discussions, reflecting growing scrutiny of her actions.

Sara Duterte, aged 46, is a trained lawyer who passed the bar exam in 2005. After graduating from San Beda College and San Sebastian College-Recoletos, she had a brief stint as a Supreme Court lawyer before transitioning to politics.

Her political career began in 2007 as Davao City’s vice mayor under her father, Rodrigo Duterte. At 32, she became the city’s first female and youngest mayor.

Among Sara Duterte’s achievements are her numerous public service projects during her tenure in Davao.

What are the possible implications of a disbarment proceeding on Vice President Sara Duterte’s political career?

A disbarment proceeding against VP Sara could potentially affect her credibility as a lawyer and public servant. While her legal credentials—such as passing the bar exam in 2005—underscore her training, such proceedings may cast doubts on her ethical standing.

With the current Sara Duterte case, it might influence public trust in her leadership and ability to uphold legal standards, which are central to her identity.

How does Larry Gadon’s request for disbarment compare to his own disbarment?

Larry Gadon, who himself faced disbarment for public use of profanities, now questions Vice President Sara Duterte’s professional conduct. Gadon’s complaint alleges that Duterte’s statements against President Marcos and other officials were illegal and destabilizing.

While Gadon’s disbarment stemmed from personal attacks, his arguments against Sara Duterte center on broader implications for governance and ethics.
