Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho features a 92-year-old grandpa who built his coffin from wood he planted himself. Lolo Sayling shared his story of why he chose to do this by himself in the KMJS episode.
The Masbate-based grandfather decided to build his coffin when he paid for his wife’s coffin when she passed in 2017. During that time, it cost ₱35,000 pesos.
“Nahirapan kami dahil walang-wala kami,” he said.
Despite others saying that it’s negative superstition to build your coffin, Lolo Sayling continued to do so. He says he decided when he was around thirty to plant a tree and use it one day to build his final resting place.

In the Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho episode, Lolo Sayling said that living is expensive, but so is dying. He said that he made the coffin himself so his son would no longer worry about buying one when he passed.
“Naisipan kong gumawa ng kabaong para sa sarili ko para ang mga kamag-anak ko hindi na mahirapan,” said Lolo Sayling in the KMJS viral episode.
Later in the video, the Jessica Soho show revealed that coffin making was his livelihood for many years. When asked how many he has made over the years, he answered, “Umabot ng mga isang daan. Sobra pa.”
The grandfather prepared so much for his passing that he did not only have a coffin ready. He already ironed out his clothes and set aside ₱1,000 to pay for the priest during his funeral.
“Ito ang damit ko nung kinasal kami at ito rin ang isusuot ko kapag namatay ako dahil maayos pa naman. Kasya pa naman.”

Moreover, his cemetery lot is also ready. His siblings, mother, and late wife surround his final resting space. He even wrote an original composition to sing at his funeral.
“Ang gusto ko talaga ay magpahinga ang pamilya ko ‘pag mawala na ako. Wala silang problema, masaya sila. Ang iiyakan lang nila ay pagkawala ko lang. Hindi sila iiyak dahil sa paghingi ng tulong para sa akin,” said Lolo Sayling.
Towards the end of the episode, the KMJS team surprised Lolo Sayling with his son, Willy. He was also emotional that he couldn’t always accompany his father in the province while he lived in Manila with his family.
Unfortunately, due to financial limitations, both couldn’t see each other physically as much as they wanted to.
