Kanlaon Volcano, located on Negros Island, is currently experiencing an explosive eruption that started at 5:51 a.m. today, April 8, 2025.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the eruption is ongoing and is producing a thick ash plume about 4,000 meters high.
The ash cloud is drifting southwest and has been clearly seen from nearby areas.
PHIVOLCS reported that pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) fast-moving flows of hot gas, ash, and volcanic materials — were observed rushing down the southern slopes of the volcano.
These were detected through visual monitoring and thermal cameras placed around the volcano.
Due to this hazardous activity, PHIVOLCS is maintaining Alert Level 3 over Kanlaon Volcano.
This means the volcano is under a high level of unrest, and dangerous eruptions are possible at any time.
People are strongly advised to avoid the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano due to the threat of sudden explosions, rockfall, and PDCs.
Earlier signs of increased activity had already been noted.
Just days before, on April 4, ash emissions were recorded.
On March 9, the volcano showed volcanic earthquakes and high sulfur dioxide gas output.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
Residents near the volcano are urged to stay alert, follow evacuation instructions if needed, and only rely on official updates from PHIVOLCS and local government units.
The public is reminded to stay safe and avoid any outdoor activities near the volcano until further notice.
Most of Kanlaon’s eruptions are phreatic, which means they are steam-driven explosions. These happen when underground water gets heated by magma and suddenly turns into steam, causing an eruption.

Before the ongoing eruption on April 8, 2025, the last recorded eruption of Kanlaon was in December 2017. It was a minor phreatic eruption that released steam and ash.
