‘Avatar’ director James Cameron took the stage at Disney’s D23 expo on Saturday and revealed that the third film is ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash.’

“There are new cultures and settings and creatures, and new biomes. You will see a lot more of Pandora, the planet, that you’ve never seen before,” said Cameron.

He also added, “The new film is not what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.”

While he didn’t preview footage of the Avatar 3 trailer, the director showed some concept art of the film, including Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldana) riding a banshee, some giant airships, and a first sneak peek at the Ash People of the Na’vi.

“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said. “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before,” Cameron said during the presentation. “We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”

James Cameron shot the third film back-to-back with its second installment, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’ The second movie centers around the war between humanity and the Na’vi after the Resources Development Administration (RDA) returns to the alien moon of Pandora.

James Cameron also hinted that ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ will pick up soon after the events in the second movie. “There are new characters, one especially I think you’re gonna love, or love to hate,” Cameron said.

“The Way of Water” and “Fire and Ash” are written by Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Originally, the script was meant to be told in a single film, but Cameron decided there was too much material and split the story into two parts.

The third movie is currently in production in New Zealand, and main stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will return as Jake Scully and Neytiri.

‘Avatar 3’ is set for release in December 2025, while the fourth and fifth movies are scheduled for 2029 and 2031.
