The Solid North Party list condemned Vice President Sara Duterte for threatening to exhume the remains of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

During a press conference on October 18, the Vice President recalled how she once warned Sen. Imee Marcos that she would exhume and throw her father’s remains into the sea.

“Isang beses sinabihan ko talaga si Sen. Imee, sabi ko pag di kayo tumigil, huhukayin ko yang tatay nyo, itatapon ko sya sa West Philippine Sea. I don’t think sumagot sya. Nandon pa yon sa group chat, merong mga nakakita na ibang tao,” Sara stated.

Sara Duterte’s statement wasn’t a laughing matter, however. Several House lawmakers found her statement offensive and called her out for it.

According to Senate President Chiz Escudero, Sara’s words were not befitting of someone in her position.

“Sana maging mas maingat sa mga salitang binibitiwan. Bahagi marahil ang paglalabas ng sama ng loob sa buhay ng tao pero hindi siguro rason ‘yun at lisensya na buksan ang paggamit ng mga salita na napapakinggan ng bata man o matanda,” Escudero said.

“This isn’t just political banter—it’s a blatant act of desecration. In our culture, we honor the dead. To use them as pawns in a political game is disgusting,” House Assistant Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong shared.

Additionally, the party viewed these remarks as an attempt to divert attention from allegations surrounding Sara Duterte’s confidential funds.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated that Sara Duterte’s “threat” violates the Revised Penal Code. While Remulla didn’t specify which Revised Penal Code was potentially violated, there are two possible articles.

Article 309 of the Civil Code defines the liability of damages of any person who disrespects the dead. On the other hand, Article 353 states that the crime of libel reflects any crime that dishonors or discredits the individual, especially someone who is deceased.

“Desecration of the dead ‘yan. May violation sa Revised Penal Code yun. Hindi rin nakakatawa yun eh,” the DOJ chief said.

The Office of the Vice President and the Marcos family made no response concerning the desecration statement.
