Evangelista, being an animal welfare advocate, is also known for having a soft spot for aspins. In fact, she even created Panda’s own Instagram account, which boasts over 7,000 followers. On the page, she playfully refers to her dog as the president of the “Aspin Society Elite.”

In addition, Heart Evangelista shared a photo of her dog with the caption: “Anong walang breed???! Mas may breeding pa ako sa inyo ha. Loka mga ‘to. Hello sa mga kasali sa Aspin Society Elite. #wagako #aspinsocietyelite #presidentpanda #notodiscrimination.”

In the comments, Heart also wrote, “#AspinSocietyELITE of the Elite !! Go anak . Mind your vocab. Sayang Ang masters degree.”

In a separate comment, she also added, “Invite mo na anak si Yoda for high tea!”

Over the weekend, Lara L. Antonio (Yoda’s owner) went viral on social media after sharing her experience with Balay Dako. The restaurant reportedly denied Yoda from entering the premises because his weight went over the establishment’s guidelines for allowable pets.

Since then, the restaurant has released a statement apologizing for the misunderstanding and stating that they’re reviewing their guidelines to ensure it’s clear and fair.

In response to the controversy, the Philippine Animal Welfare (PAWS) released a statement on Facebook.

“NO PET DESERVES TO BE TURNED AWAY FOR BEING AN ASPIN,” it said.

“Are you a business owner who put up a “pet friendly” sign to draw in more customers?

Well, “pet friendly” should mean friendly to all companion pets, and PAWS wants to remind establishments that ASPINS ARE PETS— Aspins are treasured members of people’s families,” it added.

“Pet friendly is not an aesthetic or trend. It is not just a marketing tool to exploit the bond between furparents and their pets. It should never result in discrimination.”

The statement then ended with, “Being truly pet friendly means embracing a holistic, inclusive love for all pets. Let’s ensure that your doors are open to every pet, regardless of breed. To be truly “pet friendly” is to foster genuine inclusivity and love.”
