MANILA, PHILIPPINES — During her Bvlgari shoot for the September issue of L’Officiel Philippines, actress and fashion icon Heart Evangelista opened up about going through in-vitro-fertilization (IVF) treatment.
Evangelista described the whole process as “one of the toughest, challenging times” of her life.
The actress shared that she was injected with fertility hormones three times a day within a two-week process.
“It was very difficult and painful,” the 37-year-old star said.
“After harvesting and the processes that came after, they were able to gather the perfect boy and the perfect girl,” she added.
It seems that despite having lived a seemingly glamorous life, Evangelista is not exempt from an existential crisis when she thinks about the pressure of having kids.
“Am I ready for a child?” she thought.
“I actually have a baby boy and a baby girl waiting for me, but I’m really at this stage in my life where [I ask myself]: ‘Do I want a child because I want a child?’ or ‘Do I want a child because the environment or culture dictates that I should have a child?’”
Although she went through a painful journey, the fashion icon still encouraged women to pursue IVF since it “buys them time.”
She reassures that “there is no deadline” whether a woman decides to have a child immediately or five years from now.
“Any time they decide on having a child, the embryo is there,” Evangelista said.
IVF treatment is now also available in the Philippines, not just abroad.
Throughout her interview, the actress emphasised the concept of women taking control and autonomy over their own bodies and how it has changed her.
“It’s liberating to decide according to what I want and not what other people want. That has changed me dramatically,” she said.
