Grace Tanfelix and Miguel Tanfelix share about their parent-son dynamics amid the latter’s showbiz career in an interview with Toni Gonzaga.

Their candid conversation highlighted the evolving bond, especially as they navigate the challenges and rewards of Philippine entertainment together.

During the talk, Miguel reflected on his humble beginnings long before he took the stage.

“Kaya po nagka-idea [ako] ng Starstruck Kids kasi pinapanood ko sila Mark Herras and Jennylyn [Mercado] dati sa TV,” he shared.

Meanwhile his mother, Grace, recalled the moment her son expressed his desire to audition for the show.

“Tapos ‘yun, nagyaya siya sa’kin na mag-audition daw siya,” she said, “‘Mommy, samahan mo ‘ko mag-audition ng Starstruck Kids.’”

“Tapos sabi ko pa sa kaniya, ‘Naku anak paalam ko ‘pag mga ganiyan, mahaba ang pila […] Buntis si mommy,’” she added.

However, Miguel was persistent, begging his parents to let him give it a shot. Eventually, they gave in, setting the stage for what would become a life-changing opportunity.

“So after nun, nagtuloy-tuloy na ‘yung pag-aartista mo at five years old?,” Toni asked.

“Yes, nagtuloy-tuloy po,” Miguel answered, “pero may mga times po na dumaan sa awkward stage.”

He detailed that he focused on his studies during that phase, and eventually went back into the limelight.

“Lumaki ako na simple lang po talaga kami mamuhay,” he remarked.

Eventually, the conversation topic transitioned to Grace’s parenting to Miguel.

“Nung bata-bata pa siya, medyo strikta ako sa kaniya,” she admitted.

She then added, “Pero nung nag-21 [years old]  medyo niluwagan ko na siya.”

When asked about their parent-child dynamics;

“Dati kasi, yung pera [ni Miguel] ako humahawak,” she said, “Nung nag 21 years old na siya, binigay ko na sa kaniya yung bank [account].”

Toni then asked, “Tinuruan mo ba [si Miguel] pa’no mag-handle ng finances?”

“‘Eto ‘yung pera mo anak. Eto ‘yung savings mo,’” she reiterated.

She also shared advice to her son to use his money wisely.

“[Si Miguel] magaling din humawak ng pera,” Grace remarked.

In Miguel’s perspective, their dynamics changed when he became an adult.

“Before mother-and-son ‘yung relationship namin,” he shared, “pero ngayon para kaming may teamwork.”

The entertainment industry can be both a blessing and a challenge, especially for young artists navigating the limelight with their families by their side.

As Miguel matures in both his career and personal life, his mother Grace continues to be his guidance, supporting him while giving him the freedom to make his own choices.
