The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) has appointed Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla as the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary.

The Malacañang Palace has announced that Remulla took his oath at 9:45 a.m. on October 8, 2024. He will replace Benhur Abalos, who resigned after formalizing his bid for a Senate seat in the May 2025 elections.

“The commitments can be made instantly because the two of us can always talk about what has to be done. There will be better coordination,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla said.

Sec. Remulla welcomed his brother’s appointment, saying it would significantly improve the country’s justice system. He also added that Jonvic Remulla, as DILG secretary, would be able to accelerate police and prosecutor training.

“Like minds, I think we only want the best for our country. We don’t have any other motives here. “I think it will have a very good effect on the justice system, for example, on the training of police and prosecutors. We will be able to accelerate the training,” he added.

Jonvic shared in an interview that he hopes his appointment as DILG chief “is based on competence, merit, and trust.”

“I bring almost 30 years of local government experience to the table. I have been recognized numerous times for my excellence in governance,” he added.

Remulla has spent all his political life in Cavite as a provincial legislator, acting governor, and vice governor on multiple occasions.

The appointment of Jonvic Remulla as a new DILG secretary would be the first in recent Malacañang history for the siblings to be members of the Cabinet at the same time.

Boying is among the President’s most trusted Cabinet members, while Gilbert Remulla is part of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation’s board of directors.
