MANILA, PHILIPPINES — On Monday, February 27, Gilas Pilipinas suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Jordan, 91-90, in their final game of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Philippine Arena.

During yesterday’s defeat, Justin Browlee’s 41 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists were wasted, as well as Jamie Malonzo’s 11 points and five rebounds.

Gilas coach Chot Reyes, on the other hand, blamed their weak start in the first quarter of the game, where they allowed Jordan to advance 33-14.

Gilas even tied at 88 with 1:49 left in the last quarter, but Caden Alnajdawi countered Gilas’ defense.

There was still a chance for Gilas to win the match through the reigning PBA Most Valuable Player Scottie Thompson when he got a foul, but unfortunately, he missed his two free throws, and Ray Parks missed a game-winning attempt as the time expired.

Gilas has six wins and four losses, matching Jordan in Group E.

Gilas Pilipinas to hire another naturalized player

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes plans to bring in one more naturalized player if Kai Sotto is unable to participate in the main draw of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

This follows the heartbreaking defeat of the national basketball team against Jordan with a score of 91-90 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Reyes revealed that there are some lined up to become naturalized players, such as Ange Kouame or even another player with a height of 6-10 or 6-11.

He said they no longer expect Sotto to join Gilas because he has already signed a contract with the Japan Basketball League.

Reyes added that Justin Brownlee needs a partner for them to face big teams in the FIBA World Cup.
