SB19 surprised fans by releasing the version of Gento on The First Take! The track is one of SB19’s songs, which made it to the Japanese YouTube channel. It was released a month ago and has over three million views.

Since its original release, the song has gained global recognition. Multiple social media users participated in the song’s dance challenge. Which leads to the question, what is the meaning of Gento?

For those who aren’t familiar with the Filipino term, Gento means “Ganito” or “like this” in English. It also means gold in Tagalog. The Filipino boy group placed their own take on the term and made it into a musical masterpiece.

When asked about the Gento song meaning, the group’s leader, Pablo, responded that it’s a summary of their success. “Much like ginto (gold), talagang kailangan paghirapan, kailangan mong mag persevere, kailangan mong ipush ‘yung boundary para makamit mo kung anong gusto mong mangyari sa buhay.”

The First Take’s version of Gento was released on July 1, and on August 15, the P-Pop Kings surprised fans with a social media post.

For their Gento performance on the channel, they were evidently nervous. The channel truly lived up to its name, where artists only had one chance to nail their performances. In a press statement for the release, the group said, “It was a true first take. So, we were very nervous and overwhelmed, but it was (a) fun and amazing experience.”

Moreover, this appearance pioneered Filipino talent on the Japanese channel. SB19 was the first ever Philippine and Southeast Asian Act to perform on the platform. Gento by SB19 is part of their EP, Pagtatag, for which they had a world tour and concluded in May this year.

In its initial release, the song made it to Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart. Additionally, multiple international celebrities hopped on its dance challenge. Popular names include Super Junior’s Eunhyuk, 2NEI1’s Minzy, CRAVITY members, and more.

However, the song and dance challenge craze didn’t end in 2023. Just recently, a lot of TikTok users around the world are participating in the trend, even with a new choreography. Due to this, A’TIN even jokes that the song has its own world tour.

The group also has an upcoming documentary film that shares the same title as their latest EP on selected Philippines cinemas. The showing lasts from August 28 to September 1, 2024.
