The viral “Gil Tulog” road signs, which altered the original “Sen. Gil Puyat” signage, were swiftly removed by Makati Mayor Abby Binay on Friday. When netizens first noticed the change, their reactions were mixed.
Many took to social media to confirm whether the name change was genuine or just a running joke. Photos and videos of the Gil Tulog signs quickly went viral, especially on TikTok.
While many users found humor in the alteration, some expressed concerns that the modification was disrespectful and in poor taste.

The alteration of the street sign was revealed to be a marketing stunt for a melatonin brand promoting better sleep supplements.
Mayor Binay clarified that the permit request to change the road sign never reached her office. “It is unfortunate that the request for a permit for the so-called advertising campaign to change the street signs of Gil Puyat Avenue did not reach my office,” she stated.
“Kung dumaan sa akin yan, rejected yan agad,” she added. Binay emphasized that the officials who approved the permit “should have exercised greater prudence.”
“They should have been more thorough. Dapat inisip ang kaguluhan na maaaring idulot sa mga motorista at komyuter. At dapat ay binigyang halaga ang respeto sa pamilya at sa alaala ni dating Senate President Gil Puyat. I have already reprimanded these officials for this glaring oversight,” the mayor concluded.

“Humihingi ako ng paumanhin sa ating mga kababayan at sa pamilya ni dating Senate President Puyat. These signs have been taken down on my instruction,” she added.
With his name now in the spotlight, many are asking: “Who is Gil Puyat?” The road sign honors Senator Gil Puyat, a former politician and businessman who served in the Philippine Senate from 1951 to 1972, including a term as Senate President starting in 1967.
As a legislator, Puyat championed several reforms related to the allocation of public works funds.
