EXPLAINER Denise Julia and Defamation Lawsuit Against Killakushla and BJ Pascual

A storm has erupted in the Philippine entertainment industry involving rising music star Denise Julia, renowned photographer BJ Pascual, and podcaster Killakushla (Acushla Obusan).

The issue revolves around allegations of defamation, which Denise Julia claims have tarnished her reputation.

The controversy began when BJ Pascual shared comments about Denise Julia’s alleged lack of professionalism on Killakushla’s podcast. The statements quickly spread across social media, leading to intense public scrutiny.

BJ’s remarks touched on specific incidents that he said reflected poorly on the artist’s work ethic, prompting mixed reactions from listeners.

Denise Julia, known for her soulful music, responded early on Christmas morning through Instagram stories. She addressed the issue directly and explained her and her team’s side of the story, showing screenshots of the conversations between both parties.

In a strongly worded statement, she emphasized her dedication to her craft and denied the allegations.

In Denise Julia’s Twitter (now X), the artist posted, “Hope you can back up all that when I see you in court.”

She further added, “‘Check her stories,’ and it’s all twisted narrative as usual with business that was between her and a label team, receipts is just her trash talking behind me and my best friend. ‘Bottles for me’ when my name and pics were overused for engagement in all her events.”

  1. Falsity of the Statements: Denise Julia would need to prove that BJ Pascual’s remarks about her professionalism were untrue.
  2. Public Communication: The podcast episode and social media discussions qualify as public communication, amplifying the potential damage.
  3. Damage to Reputation: Denise Julia must demonstrate how the statements directly affected her reputation and career.
  4. Malicious Intent: If the statements were made with intent to harm, this strengthens her case for defamation.

BJ Pascual has since responded to the issue via Instagram stories. Here, he debunked claims from Denise Julia’s early morning statement on Christmas.

In his post, he wrote, “My intention in sharing the context is not to escalate the matter but to provide transparency and accountability.”
