Team Philippines’ Elreen Ando finishes sixth in the women’s 59 kg weightlifting division in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday, August 8. Even though she missed the podium, she still managed to beat her personal best.

Elreen Ando lifted a total of 230 kg, including 100 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean and jerk. She needed two attempts to lift 100 kg in the snatch but failed at 102 kg on her third attempt. This matched her personal best of lifting 100kg.

Her performance in the snatch placed her in eighth place, with China’s Luo Shifang setting a new Olympic record by lifting 107kg.

In the clean and jerk, Elreen Ando failed to lift the 130 kg bar on her first attempt. However, on her second attempt, she managed to lift the bar but struggled at the jerk and was unsuccessful at lifting the bar over her shoulders. But she managed to come through on her sixth and final lift. She got a strong finish to lift the 130 kg bar, which is 2 kg more than her personal best.

Meanwhile, China’s Luo Shifang won the gold in impressive fashion.

This marked a three-for-three win for China’s weightlifting team. Canada’s Maude Charron won silver with a 236 kg total, while China’s Kuo Hsing Chun earned bronze with 235 kg.

Elreen Ando is the Philippines’ second weightlifter to go to the Paris Olympics. John Ceniza, her compatriot, exited the Olympics early in the men’s 61 kg class after failing all three snatch attempts on Wednesday. Vanessa Sarno, the third weightlifting team member, will compete in the women’s 71 kg division on Saturday morning.
