The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Tuesday issued the official December 2024 holiday pay rules, providing guidance to private sector employers and workers on proper compensation during the festive season.

Special Non-Working Holidays

For special non-working holidays, which include December 8 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception), December 24 (Christmas Eve), and December 31 (New Year’s Eve), the “no work, no pay” principle applies unless company policy states otherwise.

  • Employees working on these days must be paid 130% of their basic wage for the first eight hours.
  • Overtime work earns an additional 30% of the hourly rate.
  • If the day is also an employee’s rest day, work is compensated at 150% for the first eight hours, with overtime receiving a higher adjustment.

Regular Holidays

For regular holidays, such as December 25 (Christmas Day) and December 30 (Rizal Day), employees are entitled to double pay holiday 2024 rates under the following conditions:

  • Workers who do not report to work still receive 100% of their daily wage, provided they worked or were on paid leave the day prior to the holiday.
  • Those reporting for duty earn 200% of their daily wage for the first eight hours.
  • Overtime on regular holidays is compensated with an additional 30% of the hourly rate.
  • For holidays falling on an employee’s rest day, wages rise by 230% for the first eight hours, with further adjustments for overtime.

DOLE emphasized the importance of these guidelines in ensuring fair compensation during the busy holiday season.

Employers and employees are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the rules to avoid disputes and promote a harmonious workplace during this festive time.

What should employers and employees prioritize to ensure smooth implementation of the December 2024 holiday pay rules?

Employers and employees should carefully review DOLE’s Labor Advisory No. 14, which outlines the December 2024 holiday pay rules. Key priorities include:

  1. Accurate Payroll Calculations: Employers must apply correct rates, especially for “double pay holiday 2024” on December 25 and 30.
  2. Timely Communication: Inform employees about the specific holiday rates and work schedules ahead of time.
  3. Policy Alignment: Ensure company policies align with DOLE standards for non-working holidays, including compensation provisions for rest days and overtime.

Proactively addressing these areas ensures fair treatment, prevents disputes, and fosters workplace harmony during the festive period.
