Former Senate President Tito Sotto is renewing his push for a mandatory 14th-month pay for Filipino workers, stressing its benefits for covering tuition and medical expenses.

Sotto emphasizes that the existing 13th-month pay which is typically given to Filipino workers around Christmas offers critical financial relief during the holiday season. 

He believes that an additional month’s salary is crucial to helping employees manage expenses like school tuition and healthcare costs that often rise during the middle of the year.

As many Filipino families struggle with expenses related to education and healthcare, Sotto believes that a 14th-month pay would serve as a much-needed safety net.

“Sotto said the 13th-month pay is meant for the holidays, while the 14th-month pay would offer essential financial support in the middle of the year when many families face significant expenses.

This is not the first time that Sotto has proposed the 14th-month pay, having previously pushed the bill during his tenure in the Senate. 

Labor groups widely support the 14th-month pay, but some business sectors have raised concerns. They worry about the additional financial burden, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
