Comedy actor and stand-up performer Bob Newhart has died at his home. Longtime publicist Jerry Digney announced his death on July 18, 2024, in Los Angeles, citing a series of short illnesses as the cause.

Born on September 5, 1929, in suburban Illinois, Newhart served in the Army for two years during the Korean War and briefly attended graduate law school before deciding to drop out. Furthermore, he worked as an accountant before becoming the beloved comedic icon we know today.

He was highly praised for his dry, deadpan delivery. He has transitioned from stand-up comedy to U.S. television sitcoms, where his popularity soared. Bob Newhart starred in two hit shows: “The Bob Newhart Show” (1972-1978) and “Newhart” (1982-1990).



The actor received nine Emmy nominations, winning in 2013. More recently, he appeared in classics like the Christmas film “Elf” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Moreover, he signed with Warner Bros. Records and released “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” which topped the sales charts.

Social media users have been posting condolences and tributes to Bob Newhart, reminiscing about his famous moments.

Notably, voice actress Tara Strong shared an album of Bob Newhart photos with the hashtag #RIPBobNewhart.



Actress Morgan Fairchild shared a post on X (Twitter) upon hearing the news of Bob Newhart’s death.

“Such a loss! One of my first jobs in LA was the old Bob Newhart Show, directed by Dick Martin of Rowan & Martin,” Fairchild stated in her post. “Bob was so kind & such a doll, and always so gracious whenever I ran into him over these decades. A real One-Of-A-Kind! A loss for this town and comedy.”



Director and actor Paul Feig posted on X: “A brilliant standup & comedic actor, he was truly one of a kind. His legacy will live on.”

“God, he was funny! Bob Newhart. You will be missed!” actress Jamie Lee Curtis posted on Instagram.

Newhart was 94 years old.
