Civil society groups have reached out to President Marcos regarding former president Duterte’s accountability for alleged human rights violations during his war on drugs. They raised the issue yesterday, on July 19, 2024, in anticipation of his upcoming State of the Nation Address.
“We want him to address the accountability for the horrible corruption of the past regime,” Tindig Pilipinas governor Sylvia Claudio stated. “We want him to make Duterte accountable for the thousands of deaths in the drug war and address the violence against the woman he perpetuated.”
Former presidential adviser Teresita Deles has urged Marcos to permit the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant. In her statement, she emphasized, “The government should make sure that Duterte is made accountable. Just because he is no longer in the government, he will no longer pay for his crimes.”
Moreover, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV has noted that the ICC is expected to issue arrest warrants against the former president. His thoughts also include other individuals linked to the war on drugs.
Teddy Lopez, another Tindig Pilipinas governor, remarked that this would provide Marcos with an opportunity to demonstrate to citizens the fairness of the process in upholding the truth. He also urged the president to investigate the controversial funds of the Office of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Additionally, Akbayan Youth leader Kylla Meneses called on Marcos to enforce a total ban on Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) and hold Duterte accountable. “If we kick POGOs out now, we can also kick Duterte and China out in 2025 and 2028,” Meneses stated.
During his presidency in the Philippines, Duterte has implemented strict measures against drug dealers and criminals. However, while some citizens view these actions as effective, others consider them unnecessary and cruel. This ongoing debate has intensified recent demands for Duterte’s accountability.
