Cinemalaya Film Festival canceled the premiere of GMA Pictures’ documentary ‘Lost Sabungeros’ on Sunday, August 4, due to security concerns. However, the organizers didn’t offer further explanation on the ‘security concerns.’

The film was initially scheduled to to screened on Thursday, August 8 at 5 PM at Ayala Malls Manila Bay Cinema 2 and August 9 at 5:30 pm at Cinema 8. The slot on the August 8 screening will be replaced with Kip Oebanda’s film, ‘Balota,’ starring Marian Rivera. However, the organizers didn’t mention any replacement for the August 9 schedule.

‘Lost Sabungeros’ is the first investigative film by GMA Public Affairs. It is directed by Bryan Kristoffer Brazil. The film revolves around the case of the missing 30 sabungeros (cockfighting enthusiasts), from the incidents in 2021.

In the trailer, it features a compilation of news reports about the disappearances and interviews with the sabungeros’ families.

In an interview with GMA News, Brazil shared that creating the documentary wasn’t easy.

“Hindi lang ito kuwento ng mga sabungero, pinapakita rin nito ang matagal ng problema ng ating bansa, ang kawalang hustisya o culture of impunity na kalimitang binibiktima ang mahihirap at walang boses,” Brazil said.

The GMA report also described Lost Sabungeros as “one of the most dangerous and courageous investigative documentaries that GMA Public Affairs has produced to date,” mentioning that unidentified individuals observed the team during filming.

This year’s Cinemalaya Film Festival will run until August 11.
