Carlos Yulo secured two gold medals for the Philippines in the 2024 Paris Olympics. With his two consecutive wins, he has achieved the status of sports leader in the country. Yulo is now dubbed “The Golden Boy.”

Carlos Yulo’s 2nd gold medal came in after he won the vault finals for men’s artistic gymnastics. This followed a day after he secured the prestigious gold medal for the floor exercise. Yulo is the second Filipino to achieve first place in the Olympics after Hidilyn Diaz.

Additionally, Yulo’s 2nd gold medal made him the first Filipino to attain two gold medals in a single Olympics. Other Filipino representatives with medals in the games include:

  • Teófilo Yldefonso, swimming, bronze, 1928 Amsterdam and 1932 Los Angeles
  • Hidilyn Diaz, boxing, silver in Rio 2016, and gold in Tokyo 2021
  • Nesthy Petecio, boxing, silver in Tokyo 2021, and at least bronze in Paris 2024

Sharing his excitement for his achievement, Carlos Yulo said he couldn’t sleep after winning his first gold. The athlete mentioned, “Its crazy because last night I couldn’t sleep. I was so hyped because I had won that gold medal on the floor. It still didn’t sink in this morning, I was so sleepy, I didn’t know what to do.”

He further added, “I was just hoping to perform well (today). I didn’t really expect a medal. It really felt like a bonus for me.

Before going into the finals, Yulo placed sixth, and his final performance proved he was the best among seven competitors. For his floor exercise, Yulo scored 15.000 for his clean and difficult routine.

He was the third of seven to perform. As he patiently waited for the others to finish, the Philippines erupted in celebration when the final competitor’s score—Luke Whitehouse from Great Britain—flashed 14.466.

Carlos Yulo celebrates his double medals and redemption. Although he did not secure a medal in the Tokyo Olympics, this year’s win is an achievement for him, his community, and the Philippines.
