The Yulo brothers, Carlos and Karl Eldrew, recently reflected on their athletic journeys during an interview with ABS-CBN News at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Awards Night.
Carlos, who has made headlines as a two-time Olympic champion, expressed pride in his younger brother’s talent and dedication.
He emphasized the importance of continuous training and maintaining focus on personal goals.
“Ako masaya po ako sa kung ano yung ginagawa niya as long as wala siyang tinatapakan na tao, maging mabuti siya okay na ako para dun. At kung di niya man maabot yun, proud na proud parin ako sa dedication and hardwork [na] binibigay niya sa araw-araw na practice po.”
Karl Eldrew Yulo, a rising star in gymnastics who recently won three more gold medals in the 3rd JRC Artistic Gymnastics Stars Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, is also set to participate in upcoming competitions.
Looking ahead to 2025, Carlos shared his mindset for the upcoming SEA Games and Asian Championships. “[I’m] not expecting to win but expected po na ibibgay ko uyng best ko. No matter what – matalo manalo, marami akong learnings na matutunan this year, for sure.”
Eldrew also expressed his admiration for his older brother winning the Athlete of the Year Award.
“Of course, my brother Athlete of the Year…Gusto ko rin yung ganyang award – Athlete of the Year. I’m so proud of him always. I cried so much nung olympics…”
When asked about the possibility of both brothers competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the Yulo brothers shared their excitement and optimism. “Sobrang saya po nun for sure na dalawa kami makakatungtong sa Olympics. Exciting at the same time magiging challenge for both of us,” Carlos said.

Towards the end of the interview, one simple advice Carlos gave to the aspiring athletes is to always show up to trainings.
“Punta lang po sila araw-araw sa practice. Doesn’t matter kung ano ang mabibigay mo that day – lahat naman po tayo tinatamad, tao lang tayo. At least mabigay mo yung 0.1% mo, kahit 0.1% para mabuo lang yung 100% mo sa competition,” Carlos encouraged.
As the Yulo brothers continue their respective journeys in gymnastics, will their shared passion, determination, and faith, leave another indelible mark on Philippine sports history?
