On the evening of February 27, 2025, a portion of the Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge in Isabela province collapsed, resulting in six individuals being hospitalized, including a child.
The incident occurred when a dump truck traversing the bridge caused a section to give way, leading to the vehicle and others to plunge into the river below.
The driver of the dump truck remains missing.
The Cabagan Isabela bridge, a newly constructed infrastructure project, experienced a failure that led to multiple vehicles falling into the river below.
It’s located in Barangay Casibarag Norte, Cabagan, serves as a vital link between the towns of Cabagan and Santa Maria.
Construction of the ₱639-million bridge commenced in 2017 as an alternative to the existing overflow bridge, which becomes impassable during Cagayan River overflows.
Despite being operational for several months, the bridge had not yet been officially inaugurated at the time of the collapse.
In response to the incident, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Cagayan Valley regional office dispatched personnel to assess the damage and implement immediate safety measures.
Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and utilize alternative routes to alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
The collapse has raised concerns regarding the structural integrity and construction quality of the bridge.
