Athena Tolentino has replaced Jonvic Remulla as the new governor of Cavite. She took her oath in Tagaytay City last Tuesday, October 8, with Shernan Jaro named her vice governor.

She also vowed to continue Remulla’s programs and projects as part of her responsibilities.

“Bilang pinakabatang at kauna-unahang babaeng gobernador sa Cavite, buong puso, tapang at dedikasyon kong haharapin ang mga hamon ng paglilingkod tungo sa progreso at pagbabago.

Sa inyong suporta at dasal, hindi natin tatalikuran ang anumang hamon na dala ng pagkakataon,” Tolentino said in her Facebook post.

Tolentino won the vice gubernatorial race in the 2022 elections. On June 30 of the same year, she assumed the second highest elective position in Cavite province after serving as city councilor of Tagaytay City from 2019 to 2022.

Both she and Remulla filed for re-election this week. However, both withdrew their applications after President Marcos offered the latter to lead the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). Benjamin Abalos Jr., DILG’s original secretary, resigned from the post to run for senator.

Neither Athena nor Remulla has made any further comments regarding the current news. In related news, Remulla’s nephew Francisco Gabriel Remulla filed his certificate of candidacy, originally planning to run for Cavite’s governor before Athena Tolentino took over. He also provided no statements regarding the matter.

Athena Bryana Tolentino is the daughter of Tagaytay Mayor Abraham Tolentino and the niece of Senator Francis Tolentino. She is making headlines as one of the youngest public servants in the country and the first female governor of the Cavite province.

Born June 11, 1998, she is the second among Abraham’s three children. Upon receiving her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Université Laurentienne, Athena began her career as a Sangguniang Panlungsod Ng Tagaytay member.

She accumulated a wealth of experience before assuming the positions of vice governor and, subsequently, governor.

Athena Tolentino has made multiple advocacies in mental health, youth development, and arts and culture heritage during her run.

“It’s a game of strategy. You have endless moves, and all the patterns are there. The gameplay is on you, so it’s more of challenging each other; a timeless possibility,” Tolentino stated in a previous interview, describing her approach to solving Cavite’s problems.
