Recently, an asteroid entered the Earth’s atmosphere early Thursday morning. It was seen over Luzon with many citizens taking videos and sharing them online.

The small asteroid, designated as 2024 RW1, was detected hours earlier before entering Earth. The asteroid was roughly 1 meter, or 3 feet in size, according to The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The European Space Agency (ESA) also confirmed the asteroid’s size, as well as confirming its status as harmless to the public.

“This is just the ninth asteroid that humankind has ever spotted before impact,” the ESA said.

Chief of PAGASA’s astronomical publication and planetarium unit, Mario Raymundo, reported that the small asteroid broke apart upon entry due to air friction.

As of this article’s writing, many netizens have shared video clips of the asteroid in the Luzon. The majority of these short video clips cleary showcase how the asteroid lighted up the dark early morning skies despite its reported size.

“Here’s how Asteroid RW1 looks like from Gonzaga.” this user stated.

“One of the clearest shot of #asteroid,” another user posted.

RW1 was not the first visiting asteroid in the Philippines. Back in March 2001, three farmers discovered a meteorite in Orconuma, Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. Farmers reported the meteorite weighing up to 7.8 kilograms and kept it for nine years. In 2022, they finally turned it over to the National Museum.
