President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday unveiled the new design of Philippine money, highlighting the shift to polymer banknotes.
The redesigned bills emphasize the country’s rich biodiversity, showcasing native animals and traditional weave patterns.
Among the most notable changes is the new Philippine money picture on the 500-peso bill, which now features the Visayan spotted deer, replacing the portraits of Corazon and Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
The new polymer peso bills were presented by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) as part of the “First Philippine Polymer Banknote Series.”
In addition to the Visayan deer, the 500-peso bill includes the Acanthephippium mantinianum orchid and a Mindanao weave design.
Other denominations also feature unique Philippine money pictures and names of indigenous species. For instance, the 1,000-peso bill highlights the Philippine eagle, while the 100-peso bill showcases the Palawan peacock-pheasant.

In addition to that, President Marcos praised the shift to polymer, citing its durability and sustainability.
“By upgrading our currency, we ensure every hard-earned peso is secure, durable, and environmentally friendly,” he said.
The new money in the Philippines adopts polymer material to replace abaca, a move in line with global trends embraced by over 40 countries, including Australia and Canada.
The Philippine money new designs also serve an educational purpose, raising awareness about endangered animals in Philippine money, such as the leopard cat on the 50-peso bill.
The BSP said this focus on biodiversity complements efforts to preserve the country’s natural heritage. The Philippine money bills will initially be distributed in Metro Manila, with limited availability this Christmas season.
