CEBU, Philippines — 14-year-old chess prodigy Apple Rubin from Toledo City, Cebu, made a golden debut on the international stage, clinching the top spot in the girls’ 14-and-under blitz category at the 22nd ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships, held from August 22 to 30 in Vientiane, Laos.

Rubin, a Grade 9 student from Luray II National High School, captivated the chess world by scoring an impressive 8.5 points out of a possible 9. This culminated in a decisive victory against Vietnam’s Do Ha Trang in the final round. Her victory not only earned her the gold medal but also marked her as one of the most promising young talents in the region.

Triumph in the Blitz Category

In addition to her individual triumph, Rubin also contributed significantly to the Philippine team’s success. Team Philippines secured three silver medals in the team blitz, rapid, and standard events. Despite the challenges of competing in her first international tournament, Rubin’s performance exceeded expectations.

“Happy kaayo ko,” Rubin expressed with joy, reflecting on her journey. “I’m so thankful sa tanang nakatabang nako nga maka-join sa akong first international tournament ug very thankful ko ni Lord sa pag-guide sa akoa!”

Overcoming Challenges on the Road to Laos

Rubin’s path to the international stage was anything but smooth. She earned her spot on the national team through a strong performance at the 2024 National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Finals in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte, last June. However, the journey to Laos involved overcoming financial hurdles and last-minute issues with paperwork, which nearly prevented her from competing.

Her coach and mentor, Atty. Jeah Jean Gacang, who also serves as the team owner of the Toledo-Xignex Trojans Chess Club, played a pivotal role in guiding Rubin to success. Gacang couldn’t hide her pride in Rubin’s achievement, taking to Facebook to express her emotions. “Nothing beats the power of prayer, combined with the power of resilience and determination. When God sees and hears the desires of your heart and your passion for something, He will surround you with people who will help you achieve it,” she wrote.

Gacang extended her gratitude to everyone who supported Rubin, particularly the Toledo City local government, led by Mayor Joie Perales and Vice Mayor Jay Sigue. “It was a roller coaster ride but all worth it! Thank you everyone we made it! To God be all the Glory!” she added.

Team Philippines’ Golden Finish

Rubin’s golden performance was complemented by the achievements of fellow Filipina Kaye Lalaine Regidor from Sta. Rosa, Laguna, who also struck gold in the girls’ 16-and-under division. These victories prevented a complete gold medal shutout for the Philippines in the week-long competition, which featured top talents from across the region, including Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Japan, and other countries.

A Promising Future in Chess

Rubin’s success in the blitz category is a testament to her potential and determination. Despite modest finishes in the earlier rapid and standard events, where she placed seventh and sixth respectively, Rubin saved her best for last. Her victory in the final round against Vietnam’s Ha Trang Do was the crowning achievement of her seven-match winning streak, interrupted only by a draw in the eighth round against Nhat Minh Dao.

As she returns to the Philippines, Rubin brings with her not just a gold medal but a sense of pride and accomplishment that promises a bright future in the world of chess. Her journey, marked by challenges and triumphs, stands as an inspiring example of what can be achieved with determination, support, and faith.

Rubin’s story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, extraordinary achievements are possible, setting the stage for even greater accomplishments in the years to come.
