During the Paris Olympics 2024, French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati became an unexpected viral sensation after a peculiar incident involving his crotch caused him to miss a medal opportunity. The 21-year-old athlete’s bid for the finals came to an unfortunate end when his bulge inadvertently knocked down the bar during his jump. This prevented him from clearing the required height of 5.70 meters. Ammirati’s misfortune has not only cost him a shot at the podium but also led to his exit from the competition, alongside other French pole vaulters.

The incident, which took place on Saturday, left commentators at a loss for words and quickly set social media abuzz. Memes and jokes flooded platforms, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) humorously commenting, “When you’re about to win an Olympic medal but your massive d*ck gets in the way while the whole world watches in slow motion.”

French media outlets have been more sympathetic, focusing on the unfortunate twist of fate that robbed Ammirati of his Paris Olympics dream. The incident provided a brief comedic interlude amidst a series of controversies plaguing the Games, including online hate speech targeted at artistic director Thomas Jolly and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif.

Ammirati isn’t the first pole vaulter to experience such a mishap. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Japan’s Hiroki Ogita similarly made headlines after his private parts dislodged the bar.

Despite the setback, Ammirati’s situation has brought some levity to the otherwise tense atmosphere of the games. While the young athlete’s Olympic journey ended in disappointment, his viral moment has certainly left a lasting impression on viewers worldwide.
