South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in was sentenced to one year of jail on Tuesday, September 3, for drug charges. Yoo was accused of illegally using propofol, a medical anesthetic, 181 times between 2020 and 2022.
The prosecution originally sought a four-year sentence for the actor, but the Seoul Central District Court handed him a one-year term in jail instead.
“He is deemed guilty of all his purchases for habitual drug use,” the court stated in its ruling, according to Yonhap News TV. The court also said that Yoo committed offences “in disregard of relevant regulations” and displayed a “lack of caution against drug substances.”

Last month, a doctor who prescribed Yoo Ah-in propofol without a proper prescription was fined 40 million won ($30,000).
“I am sorry for having caused concern to many people,” Yoo said in court, as reported by Yonhap News.
Yoo Ah-in is the latest celebrity caught by the authorities crackdown on drugs. Lately, a series of drug-related arrests involving celebrities and heirs of conglomerates, or ‘chaebols,’ has caused South Korean authorities to intensify efforts to crack down on narcotics and enhance customs inspections.
Similarly, K-pop star G-Dragon was accused of drug use and questioned by police. However, his case was dismissed in November due to insufficient evidence.
