A 5.9 magnitude earthquake strikes Leyte early today

a 5 9 magnitude earthquake strikes near southern leyte early this morning

Earlier today, January 23, 2025, PHIVOLCS has announced that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Southern Leyte, specifically located 7 km south-southeast of San Francisco at a depth of 10 km.

This seismic event occurred at 7:39 AM CST, drawing attention to the ongoing tectonic activity in the region. The coordinates of the earthquake were recorded as 10.00°N, 125.19°E.

The earthquake’s epicenter was close to Southern Leyte, an area that has experienced several seismic activities recently. On January 15, a smaller earthquake measuring 3.1 in magnitude was reported just north of Sogod.

Meanwhile, although Tacloban City, located in Leyte province, was not directly impacted by today’s earthquake, it remains vulnerable due to its geographical location. The city has experienced significant seismic events in the past, with residents remaining alert for aftershocks following larger earthquakes.

Siargao Island, known for its beautiful beaches and surfing spots, is also situated in a seismically active region. While there have been no recent reports of significant earthquakes affecting Siargao directly, its proximity to Leyte means that tremors could potentially be felt there as well.
