The Department of Health (DOH) has officially confirmed a case of Mpox in the Philippines. It was given the details on Sunday but confirmed the report today, on August 19. The announcement of an additional Mpox case in 2024 resulted in a total of 10 cases, the last case being confirmed back in December 2023.

“The case is a 33-year-old male Filipino national with no travel history outside the Philippines but with close, intimate contact three weeks before symptom onset,” the DOH said. However, it did not specify the exact location where the Mpox case was recorded.

Mpox symptoms started more than a week ago with fever. After four days, the infected individuals will develop distinct rashes on the face, back, nape, palms, and soles. The DOH stated that additional Mpox symptoms include headache, muscle pains, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

Just how Mpox is transmitted? Experts say Mpox transmission revolves around close contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials, or even infected animals. Moreover, Mpox is deadly if left untreated. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), fatalities can range between  1 to 10%.

The WHO also officially declared Mpox cases a global public health emergency last week. This marks the second time following the Mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Fortunately, the current cases of Mpox cases in the Philippines have not resulted in death. Additionally, according to the DOH, all previous cases of Mpox in the Philippines have been handled with patients recovering from the matter. The last case is currently in isolation.

“We can avoid Mpox. Mpox is transmitted through close, intimate contact, and also the materials used by people who have mpox,” DOH Secretary Teodoro Herbosa stated. “Keeping our hands clean with soap and water or with alcohol-based sanitizers will help.”

Herbosa also added that DOH will make the testing process as convenient as possible, so that suspect Mpox cases may be identified fast and allowed to stay at home.
